GENERAL PURPOSE
To perform skilled work in driving and operating a waste collection vehicle equipped with a hydraulic collection mechanism.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Employee has no supervisory responsibilities.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
Operates a waste collection vehicle equipped with a hydraulic collection mechanism to maneuver the container for dumping into collection vehicle; receives and follows an assigned daily route for waste collection; drives truck to transfer station to dispose of refuse in designated areas as directed by facility personnel.
Prepares Pre-Trip and Post-Trip vehicle inspection reports according to the division’s policies; checking fluid levels and operating condition of assigned truck. Reports any malfunctions or repair work needed to Supervisor. Performs operator level preventive maintenance; to include daily cleaning, on assigned vehicle and equipment.
Operates the waste collection vehicle in high risk traffic conditions; remains alert to surrounding environment and potential safety hazards; collects waste in a safe manner, assuring the safety of the general public.
Informs residents about proper placement of cart and similar information as required; and refers complaints, violations of refuse ordinances and special service needs to Supervisor.
Performs waste screening at the pickup point and reports uncollectable or hazardous materials to the supervisor.
Adheres to safety precautions and regulations related to the operation of equipment; complies with all City and departmental safety rules, policies, and procedures; uses and wears personal protective equipment and clothing, and complies with safe working controls; reports all accidents or injuries to the supervisor immediately; completes reports as required.
Effectively works together to meet the needs of the community and City through superior customer service, commitment and integrity.
Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations; and complies with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.
Performs other duties as assigned.
